LOOK'S GUIDE, Look's Guide to the World's Fair What You Will See and Do
LOOK'S GUIDE
Look's Guide to the World's Fair What You Will See and Do
New York, NY: New York Convention and Visitors Bureau, 1964. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Pamphlet. B&W and Color Illustrations; This is a thin booklet / guide to the New York World's Fair (1934) from Look Magazine. The booklet is in Good only condition. The booklet covers have been reglued at the top edge. The booklet covers (this is a flip- style booklet) has some rubbing and wear at the top edge, and the bottom edge has several nicks and small edge tears. The text pages of the booklet (newspaper) have noticeable generalized toning. The center of the booklet has a map of the fair, along with a legend of events and places. "The fair is noted as a showcase of mid-twentieth-century American culture and technology. The nascent Space Age, with its vista of promise, was well represented. More than 51 million people attended the fair, though fewer than the hoped-for 70 million. It remains a touchstone for many American Baby Boomers who visited the optimistic exposition as children, before the turbulent years of the Vietnam War and many to be forthcoming cultural changes. In many ways the fair symbolized a grand consumer show, covering many products then-produced in America for transportation, living, and consumer electronic needs in a way that would never be repeated at future world's fairs in North America. American manufacturers of pens, chemicals, computers, and automobiles had a major presence. This fair gave many attendees their first interaction with computer equipment. Corporations demonstrated the use of mainframe computers, computer terminals with keyboards and CRT displays, teletype machines, punch cards, and telephone modems in an era when computer equipment was kept in back offices away from the public, decades before the Internet and home computers were at everyone's disposal. PETERS, ELIZABETH (BARBARA MERTZ)
Die for Love
New York: Congdon & Weed, Inc, 1984. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. 3-ring binder. ISBN: 0312921373. Illustrated by Candy Jernigan. Cover Art; This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Very Good+ dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is crisp and clean with the exception of some light generalized fading to the spine and covers. There is toning / yellowing to the edges of the dust jacket flaps. "Barbara Gross was born on September 29, 1927, in Canton, Illinois. [1] She graduated from the University of Chicago with a bachelor's degree in 1947, a master's degree in 1950, and a PhD in Egyptology in 1952, [2] having studied with John A. Wilson. [3] She authored two books on ancient Egypt (both of which have been continuously in print since first publication) , but primarily wrote mystery and suspense novels. She became a published writer in 1964. She was married to Richard Mertz for 19 years (1950–1969) ; the marriage ended in divorce. They had two children, Peter and Elizabeth Mertz. Under the name Barbara Michaels, she wrote primarily gothic and supernatural thrillers. Her publisher chose that pseudonym since Mertz had already published one non-fiction book on ancient Egypt, and the publisher did not want Mertz's novels to be confused with her academic work. Under the pseudonym Elizabeth Peters, Mertz published mysteries, including her Amelia Peabody historical mystery series, using a nom de plume drawn from the names of her two children.
